Senators resume amendment of Prisons Act

Abuja - The Senate has commenced the amendment of the Nigeria Prisons Act in a development aimed at reforming the country’s prisons from their poor state and overcrowding.

The development follows the second reading of three bills on Wednesday.

These are Bill for an Act to Repeal and Re-enact the Prison Act, Bill for an Act to Repeal and Re-enact the Prison Act and Bill for an Act to Repeal and Re-enact the Prison Act.

Senators Shaba Lafiagi, Babajide Omoworare and Oluremi Tinubu, respectively are sponsoring the bills.

Tinubu in her lead debate stressed the need to establish women and children unit in Nigeria prisons.

Sani said the prison institution in Nigeria had refused to depart from previous governments to reform the system.

“All attempts by previous governments to reform the prison system have failed. Apart from the nothing else has changed in the Nigeria prison system,” Sani said.

Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the plenary, referred the three bills to Committee on Interior and Judiciary.

He urged the committees to consolidate the bills and report back in four weeks.
