States security propping Fulani herdsmen - IEI

18 April 2016, 19:43

Abuja - The Igbo Ekunie Initiative (IEI) has bemoaned the alleged double standards by the state security agencies in the handling the crisis posed by the Fulani herdsman.

IEI, comprising individuals in Nigeria and the Diaspora, fingered the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigerian army and other security outfits.

Officials said of particular note is the arrest and hounding into jail of 76 persons in Agwu local government area of Enugu state by military personnel for trying to protect themselves where the security agencies had not offered protection.

Maazi Tochukwu Ezeoke, President of the organisation, and Lawrence Nwobu, Secretary, signed the document.

“Indeed, it’s even more appalling that the Nigerian army resorted to denying their implication in aiding and abetting terrorist herdsmen on tribal grounds by falsely claiming the arrest of the Agwu 76 was done by fake soldiers.”

IEI said both the DSS and the Nigerian police had in their inaction to bring the herdsmen to book, had proven to be part of the “axis of tribalism” that favours, aids and abets Fulani herdsmen over and above other Nigerian citizens.”

The organisation said while DSS hurriedly recently issued a press release suggesting Indigenous People’s Organisation of Biafra (IPOB) were responsible for the alleged murder of five herdsmen, DSS had not  issued a press release, nor investigate the serial mass killings, rape, maiming and burning down of whole communities across Nigeria by Fulani herdsmen.

IEI warned of the implications of the polarization of communities along tribal lines.

“While it is regrettable that no lessons were learnt from the Nigeria-Biafra war that was occasioned principally by tribal divisions within the army, we warn that the relapse to sectionalism/tribalism by Nigerian security services is a dangerous and sure recipe for doom.”

Hundreds have been killed in the clashes between Fulani herdsmen and villagers around the country.
