Tinubu nominated me for Vice President- Osinbajo

05 November 2016, 07:05

Lagos - Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has finally opened up on who nominated him for the position.

Osinbajo said he was nominated by a National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Osinbajo, however, did not mention the person's name but described him as a former governor - the description believed to be Bola Tinubu.

The Vice President, who spoke at a State of the Nation Address convened by Coalition of Nigerian Apostolic Leaders in Lagos, said: “An APC National Leader who had served when he was governor was interested in putting me forward as the running mate of President Muhammadu Buhari in consensus with other national leaders of the party.

Buhari's recently-launched biography, written by Professor John Paden, had sparked controversy over who nominated Osinbajo as Vice President.

Paden had claimed in the book,The Challenges of Leadership in Nigeria, that Tinubu actually wanted to become the Vice President but was handicapped by the religion factor - a Muslim president and vice president ticket would have automatically won the race for the then incumbent President, Goodluck Jonathan.

Paden claimed in the book that the President chose Osinbajo as his running mate despite the alleged opposition of Tinubu.

The author claimed that the names of Tinubu, Babatunde Fashola and Osinbajo were forwarded to Buhari for him to pick a running mate shortly after he emerged the party’s candidate at its convention in Lagos.

He claimed that Buhari chose Osinbajo above others despite enormous pressure from Tinubu to do otherwise.

Tinubu’s loyalists faulted the account of the author, saying he (Tinubu) nominated the Vice-President.
