07 January 2016, 09:52

Abuja - An Anambra man has been arrested after he allegedly tried to sell his five-month-old son for N400 000, Punch reports.

The suspect, Okwuchukwu Ibekwe, is alleged to have made an agreement with his wife to attempt to sell the child after the couple fell on hard times.

It was reported that the couple contacted a woman by the name of Chinelo, who was willing to go through with the transaction. Chinelo allegedly paid N250 000 to the father of the child, leaving N150 000 for the mother.

Okwuchukwu is alleged to have gotten into a quarrel with his wife, however, refusing to give her her portion of the funds. The mother of the child then proceeded to report the transaction to officials in the area.

Although the mother of the child as well as Chinelo remain on the run, Okwuchukwu along with Chinelo's husband have been remanded into police custody.

Police have stated that they are currently intensifying efforts to ascertain the child's whereabouts.
