US funds competition to thwart Boko Haram

26 October 2016, 17:26

Abuja - Local organizations have been encouraged to participate in a competition run by the United States to mitigate threats of violent extremism in Nigeria and Kenya.

The Department of State, Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor (DRL) is running the competition for organisations interested in submitting applications for projects that support the DRL policy goal to promote community resilience and empower youth leaders to recognise and prevent violence committed by groups such as Boko Haram and Al Shabaab.

To achieve this goal, successful programmes should seek to create networks of community and youth leaders to share lessons learned and practical ways to develop resilience to threats posed by extremist groups.

The successful programme will train community leaders, particularly youth leaders, to recognise threats that lead to violence and address community challenges resulting from such threats.

The programme should target regions in northeastern Nigeria and Kenya’s coastal and northeast as well as Nairobi.

DRL anticipates having $1.185 million available to support successful applications.

Applicants should include an anticipated start date between March 2017 – June 2017 and the period of performance should be at least 24 months.
