Why Twitter suspended Niger Delta Avengers' account

05 July 2016, 06:32

Abuja - Twitter suspended the account of the Niger Delta Avengers yesterday, after the group's announcement on the social media site that it had carried out five attacks on key oil installations recently, Vanguard reports.

Twitter never responds individually to the suspension of specific accounts, however a spokesman for the company said that the Avengers' account was suspended due to the company's strict policies.

These policies detail specific rules pertaining to violent threats made by organisations or any individual.

"You may not make threats of violence or promote violence, including threatening or promoting terrorism," the spokesman said.

News24 Nigeria reported that The Avengers account is in contravention of this rule as it uses Twitter as its main form of communication of violence or threats of violence.

Twitter added that it has suspended more than 125,000 terrorism related accounts since mid-2015.
