Youth decry deadly Benue clashes

25 February 2016, 18:06Emeka Okonkwo

Abuja - The Agatu Youth Movement, a pressure group, has appealed to the Federal and Benue State Governments to intervene amid the killing of locals by Fulani cattle herders.

President of the group, Jeremiah Friday, said the reign of terror by the herdsmen had also led to destruction of property.

“We are using this medium to call the attention of the Federal and State Governments to respond quickly to the killing of Agatu people by Fulani herdsmen,” Friday said.

He said homes were being destroyed and lives lost, much to the suffering of locals.

“Our Parents and children have been rendered helpless. We sleep with our two eyes open. The State Federal Government is silent about it,” Friday said.

The organisation has hinted at protests to demonstrate against the continued killings.

Comment could not be obtained from police and government.

However, it was reported earlier police had been sent to quell the crisis while Agatu elders had met Governor Samuel Ortom to find a solution to the deadly crisis largely emanating from disputes over land.
