Be careful how you handle 'thorny' issues against Tompolo, Buhari warned

28 February 2016, 18:08

Abuja - A Niger-Delta youth leader and activist has warned President Muhammadu Buhari to be careful on how he handles the "thorny" issues against former militant leader Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo.

According to Vanguard, Sheriff Mulade said there was fear of the emergence of more dangerous militants in the region if Tompolo's issue was not handled with care.

This came after Tompolo recently failed to appear in court to answer to fraud charges of N45.9bn preferred against him and nine others by the anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

A warrant of arrest had been issued against him on January 14 and February 8 by Justice Ibrahim Buba of a Federal High Court in Lagos.

"Government should not create loopholes for more dangerous militants suppressed by    Tompolo’s    presence from taking advantage of his issue with the government to cause more havoc in the region," Mulade was quoted as saying.

He said they were many loyalists of the former warlord in the region that were ready to resort to violence and destroy oil facilities.
