13 parties back Buhari on appointment of new INEC Chairman

03 July 2015, 20:18

Abuja - The Coalition of Progressive Political Parties, the umbrella organisation for 13 registered political parties in Nigeria has welcomed the appointment of Amina Zakari as the Acting National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), reports Punch.

The parties applauded President Muhammadu Buhari for appointing Zakari being the most senior INEC National Commissioner when the tenure of former Chairman of the commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega expired on Tuesday.

Bashir Ibrahim, the Chairman of the Coalition and National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM), condemned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for rejecting the appointment of Zakari.

He noted that the PDP is trying to lay a dangerous precedence by trying to decide for the country who becomes the INEC chairman.

He stated that the PDP criticism of the appointment is tantamount to politicising the process and the commission itself, which is capable of creating dangerous schism in the commission and generating unnecessary tension in the country.
