14 parties back INEC's decision on Bayelsa election

Yenagoa - 14 out of the 20 parties that contested the December 5 governorship election in Bayelsa State have commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for cancelling Saturday’s governorship election in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, reports The Nation.

The parties include Social Democratic Party (SDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied Congress Party (ACP), Kowa Party (KP), Independent Democrats (ID), Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) and Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN).

Speaking on behalf of the political parties at a news conference in Yenagoa on Wednesday, Prince Elemah of Independent Democrats (ID) said the election in the Southern Ijaw Local government was marred by electoral fraud.

Elemah said INEC personnel and materials were hijacked by hoodlums through the instrumentality of the security operatives, who also harassed and, intimidated voters.

He said INEC did the right thing by cancelling the election in the troubled area.
