20 senators, 50 Reps set to dump PDP over Sheriff

18 February 2016, 16:39

Abuja - No fewer than 20 senators and 50 House of Representatives members elected under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have threatened to dump the party if Ali Modu Sheriff continues to stay as the PDP National Chairman, reports Tribune.

Sheriff was appointed on Tuesday to replace Adamu Mu’azu, who resigned after the 2015 general elections.

It was learnt that the party's zonal Chairmen, the state chairmen and other stakeholders, including the National Assembly, voted against the choice of former governor, but governors of the party insisted on Sheriff.

With the decision of the governors to go ahead  with Sheriff, the PDP lawmakers have indicated their interest to leave the party.

Most of the lawmakers are from the South-East and South-South geopolitical zones.

Their destination could be the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or the Labour Party.

PDP currently has 47 of the 109 senators and 141 of 360 members of the House of Representatives.
