ANPP member busted in anti-terror swoop

08 July 2013, 08:02

Abuja - The Joint Task Force (JTF) tasked to fight terrorism in Nigeria arrested a senior opposition ANPP member in the Borno State.

JTF agents arrested the Chairman of the All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP) in Borno state, Alhaji Mala Othman, as part of the so-called Operation Restore Order.

JTF spokesman, Lt Col. Sagir Musa said Othman was in custody of the JTF and currently undergoing interrogation.

Othman's arrest follows the dislodging of members of Boko Haram from their strongholds of Bulabulin, Nganaram and Bayan Quarters, which are known strongholds of the sect.

This past weekend, the military launched attacks on the areas and killed undisclosed number of the sect and recovered arms and ammunition.

On Saturday, troops recovered AK47 rifles, a submarine gun, bombs, empty magazines, launchers, army camouflage uniforms and two tricycles from some suspected terrorist hideouts in Bulabulin area.

"The latest efforts of the task force led to the dislodgement of the insurgents and the recovery of arms, ammunitions, IED materials and some terrorists died during an exchange of fire with the JTF troops," Musa said.
