APC chairman, Sylva clash over running mate

06 October 2015, 19:16

Yenagoa - Ahead of the December 5 governorship election in Bayelsa State, a major crack has occurred between the State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tiwei Orunimighe, and the party’s candidate in the election, Timipre Sylva, over the choice of a running mate, reports NewsDay.

Youths loyal to Orunimighe stormed the party’s secretariat on Tuesday and destroyed billboards, banners, posters and other campaign materials of Sylva.

The protest follows speculations that Sylva, a former governor of the state, had picked another running mate instead of Orunimighe.

The angry youths alleged that Sylva had reneged on his promise of running with Orunimighe, whom they claimed made it possible for Sylva to emerge as the candidate for the party at the primary election.

The youths, who carried placards, said APC would cease to exist in the state if Sylva denied Orunimighe the running mate slot.

The activities of the youths caused tension in the area and led to the deployment of armed policemen to forestall further breakdown of law and order.
