22 October 2015, 13:30

Abuja - Following Wednesday’s tribunal ruling, which nullified the governorship elections in 18 out of the 31 local government areas of Akwa Ibom State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has asked Governor Udom Emmanuel to step down from office, reports The Nation.

APC National Deputy Chairman (South), Segun Oni, who spoke on behalf of the party, said the position of the party is that the governor should vacate office because he did not meet the criteria for victory at the poll.

He said with the cancellation of the results in 18 local governments, it is evident that the governor did not meet the criterion of spread as stipulated by the Constitution.

The tribunal had in its ruling ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a re-run of the election in the affected local governments within the next 90 days.
