APGA is ready for Ebonyi council polls

22 July 2013, 16:16

Abakaliki - The Chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Ebonyi, Mr Jerry Obasi, has said that the party will be victorious in the Sept. 28, local government elections in the state.

Obasi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abakaliki on Monday that the party had mobilised men and resources to achieve “a land slide victory” in the exercise.

He dismissed as untenable, insinuations that no other political party in the state had the political muscle and resources to contest election in the state apart from the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP).

“Our party is fully prepared and equipped in terms of human and material resources for the contest of the council election.

“All I have to say is that our party is strong, viable and with formidable candidates to beat,’’ Obasi said.

He said the party adopted internal democracy in the selection of its candidates and rejected any form of imposition in line with the guiding principle and philosophy of the party.

“We ensured that our flag bearers in the forthcoming elections emerged through transparent party primaries for both counsellorship and chairmanship candidates in all the 13 council areas and wards of the state.

“We have selected men and women of integrity and with track record during the primaries. We are sure of victory in the election,’’ he said.

The party chairman urged the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) to leave above the board in the exercise of its statutory function.

Obasi also advised the commission to eschew partisanship by providing level playing ground to all the candidates irrespective of party affiliation.

he said, “Local government elections are very critical in the quest to enthrone solid democratic norms and values.

“I appeal to the commission to conduct hitch-free and credible elections and to ensure that the votes of the electorate counted.''

He said that the party had emerged stronger after the leadership crisis that engulfed it, adding that APGA would win more states in future national elections.

Obasi described Victor Umeh, the National Chairman of APGA as a "performer".

He added that with the Appeal Court verdict that gave him victory, APGA was set to reclaim more states and win more seats in the state and National Assembly.
