Abuja -The Chairman, House of Representatives
Committee on Finance, Abdulmumin Jibrin, on Wednesday in Abuja rated
the office of the Accountant General of the Federation (AGF) fair on
"We have looked at the releases and performance of the office of the
AGF and we won’t say it is excellent, but we will say that it is
fair,’’ Jibrin said during the committee’s oversight visit to the
"We have had a very good interaction and we believe that the AGF is
doing a good job; the committee will continue to support him so that the
office can deliver better.
"Apart from asking you questions about your activities, we also have the responsibility to protect you."
Jibrin also asked the AGF to present a report on issues currently
facing the Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) to the House.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that FAAC meeting held twice
in September without sharing any funds due to disagreements in revenue
sharing between states and Federal Government.
Earlier, the Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), Jonah
Otunla, said it was unnecessary for the AGF’s office to be divided into
two as proposed by the National Assembly.
"I have noted that there is a proposal to split the AGF’s office
into two namely: the office of the Accountant General of the Federation
and the office of the Accountant General of the Federal Republic of
"The creation of two offices from the present office of the
Accountant General of the Federation is not only unnecessary, but also
preposterous and against international best practices.
"The present institutional arrangement is adequate to address
whatever fears or concerns states may have on the equitable distribution
of allocations,’’ he said.
He said the office was working to implement the International Public
Sector Accounting Standards and Government Integrated Financial
Management Information System (GIFMIS) in the treasury to enhance
accountability and transparency.
"With GIFMIS, once we have agreed to share the federation revenue
for the month between the three tiers of government, it can be done and
within two hours, and all tiers will receive their money,’’ he said.
