Court sacks PDP lawmaker in Benue

09 July 2015, 18:09

Makurdi - The Federal High Court sitting in Makurdi, has sacked a member of the Benue State House of Assembly, representing Oju 2 State Constituency, Mathew Ire of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), reports Vanguard.

The court in its ruling ordered Ire to vacate the seat because he was not the duly elected candidate of the party.

Ire had contested the PDP House of Assembly primaries in November 29, 2014 alongside Agi Micheal Adikwu and Jairus Erube, who was the incumbent.

During the PDP primaries, Ire, who was declared winner, scored 10 votes while Adikwu polled 11 votes and Erube got 5 votes respectively.

Despite the fact that Ire lost out in the election, the PDP went ahead and presented his name as the party candidate’s for the April 11 Assembly election.

He eventually won the election and the Independently National Electoral Commission (INEC) issued him a Certificate of Return.

The court ruled that it was illegal for the PDP to substitute the name of the winner of the primaries and fielding Ire, who did not score the highest number of votes.
