Abuja - The Transition Monitoring Group (TMG)
has welcomed the appointment of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu as the Chairman of the
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
President Muhammadu Buhari made the announcement earlier
TMG Chairman, Ibrahim Zikirullahi, said it is was a welcome development that
the nation’s election management body
(EMB) now had a substantive helmsman and a complement of National Commissioners
to direct its affairs.
He however said Yakubu would now be saddled with the
enormous responsibility of superintending the nation’s electoral process.
"Nigerians therefore look forward to a proactive
INEC leadership that would manage the electoral process in a manner that would
improve credibility and consolidate on recent gains," Zikirullahi said.
He said as Nigeria’s foremost election observation and
civic education coalition, TMG was optimistic Yakubu would bring his wealth of
experience as a scholar and an administrator to bear on this new assignment.

“Coming at a time when preparations are in top gear for
the governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa, Yakubu’s appointment will
surely give the commission a vitally needed fresh impetus."
“For TMG, the emergence of Professor Yakubu is a
veritable opportunity to consolidate on the gains made by INEC under the
previous leadership," said Zikirullahi.
The group called on the new INEC helmsman to examine the
extant challenges facing the commission and take decisive steps towards
He urged the electoral executive to thus forge a greater
partnership with all relevant stakeholders, including the civil society, the
media and security agencies.
He called on all stakeholders to start making
the push for institutional and legislative reforms of the electoral process.
