FCT polls: CPC urges candidates to be agents of change

10 February 2013, 09:45

Abuja - The Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), has challenged its candidates in the March 16, FCT Area Council elections to be guided by the party’s ideology of genuine transformation of the country.

The CPC National Chairman, Mr Tony Momoh, gave the advice on Saturday in Abuja at the party’s inaugural campaign for the polls.

Momoh advised the party’s flag bearers to pursue programmes that would improve the wellbeing of the people if elected.

He, however, warned them to resist the temptation to loot resources meant for the development of their councils.

"When you get there, make sure you do what will change the lives of the people for good and make Nigerians proud.

"You should go there to work not to share our resources because very soon those who share public resources will be stoned.

"You are our disciples in bringing about the change that is reflective of our party’s ideology,’’ he said.

Momoh also urged party faithful to commence mobilisation of the supporters across the FCT to come out to vote and protect the power of their vote.

"As you leave here, start mobilising our supporters to come out and vote. Do not sell your vote. Do not compromise your vote because that’s your power to effect positive change.”

Also Speaking, the FCT Chairman of CPC, Mr Isa Saidu said that the party enjoyed massive support of the people determined to vote and ensure that their votes counted.

He disclosed that the party was taking steps to educate the supporters to avoid violence and work toward a peaceful conduct of the elections.

"As far as we are concerned, the people are with us and we are resolved to protect our votes this time around. Our supporters will vote and make sure they protect their votes.

"We are talking to our people to come out and protect their votes. We saying they should not go on violence because violence will only bring suffering to the people.

"We are advising our people, guiding them, counseling them that we don’t want violence. They should go out cast their votes and wait for the votes to be counted,’’ he added.

The CPC chairmanship flag bearer for AMAC, Alhaji Abdullahi Adamu, said that if elected, he would explore the various revenue generating opportunities in the area for development.

According to him, the generated revenue will be used to improve education, youth empowerment and development of infrastructure in AMAC.

Speaking on behalf of the candidates, the CPC chairmanship flag bearer for Bwari Area Council, Mr Musa Dikko promised that they were prepared to transform FCT.

He also gave the assurance that they would do everything possible to ensure peaceful conduct by their supporters during and after the elections.

"We have already assured the security agencies that CPC has nothing to do with hiring of crowds. We are talking to our supporters not to be involved in violence of any form.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the national chairman presented flags to the party’s candidates in the elections in the six area councils of the territory.
