Gov. Aliyu denies interest in 2015 presidency

17 January 2013, 07:34

Minna - Gov. Babangida Aliyu of Niger on Wednesday said that he has not declared interest in the 2015 presidency.

Aliyu also dismissed the purported commencement of his presidential campaign in Plateau as untrue.

He made the clarification in Minna when he received the Ethiopian Ambassador in Nigeria, Mr Ali Abdul Sulaiman, and the new Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Prof. Musibau Akanbi.

He recalled that the PDP at the national level had barred aspirants from all campaigns for the 2015 general elections till sometimes next year.

Aliyu said that he was complying with the directive as a loyal party member and law abiding citizen.

He explained that it was the National Youth Leader of the party, Alhaji Garba Umaru, who incidentally was from Niger, who led a delegation to Plateau to thank the PDP members in that state for voting for him during the national convention of the party.

"This has now been misconstrued as a presidential campaign flag off by me," the governor said.

Aliyu, however, said his clarification of the situation was not an indication that he was afraid to contest for the presidency when the time comes.

"If it is God's will that I would come out, believe me I am not afraid I will come out because what will be, will be but I am not out yet."

The governor enjoined the media to disseminate correct information at all times to avoid over heating the polity, noting that some reports often misinform the public.

Aliyu hailed the cordial relationship between Nigeria and Ethiopia as well as the giant strides Ethiopia had taken in the fields of aviation, tourism and culture.

He said that the state would partner with Ethiopia to develop some of its sectors.

Earlier, while exchanging views with the vice chancellor of the university, the governor advised him to be fair to the host community in admission of students and recruitment of workers.

He said the university authorities should put proper beacons to prevent encroachment on their land by some persons or groups and promised to assist in that direction.

Akanbi commended the fatherly role played by the governor during the impasse that greeted his appointment and his transition period.

He also described the gesture of the State Government to pay the registration fees of 569 students of the university as a legacy the government would leave for generations yet unborn in the state.
