Kano - The Kano North Senatorial District comprising of 13 local governments on Sunday rejected the proposed single tenure for the President and Governors in the ongoing constitutional amendment.
The zone also demanded for more powers and increased resource allocation to states and local governments in the country.
NAN reports that the position of the zone is coming ahead of the zonal presentation of memorandum for the review of the constitution scheduled to hold in Sokoto between 15 and 16 of this month.
Sen. Bello Hayatu representing the area made this known during a stakeholders meeting he organised in Kano on Sunday to fashion out position of the senatorial zone on the proposed amendment.
He said that he decided to sensitise stakeholders and other people in the area on the importance of the ongoing constitution review to enable them contribute meaningfully in the ongoing exercise.
NAN reports that key issues such as state creation, state police and rotational presidency were overwhelmingly rejected by the stakeholders as majority of the participants rose in unison to reject the proposed areas.
Participants at the public hearing were of the view that criteria for states creation should be hinged on population, landmass and viability rather than on geo-political zones, insisting that Kano should be considered when issue of state creation was generally accepted.
Most of the people who spoke to NAN at the venue of the event said that the problem with Nigeria was beyond state creation, therefore, insisted on having good leadership and fair distribution of the nation’s resources.
The meeting also rejected resource control by states with natural resources, arguing that such resources were God- given and should be treated commonly.
The stakeholders meeting noted that ``state police will only worsen security situation in the country and give unnecessary powers to state governors who will in turn take advantage of their new powers.’’
NAN reports that the state Deputy Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who attended the meeting called on the people to take cognisance of all the issues which would promote their culture, religious beliefs and economic advancement.
