Abuja – All Progressives Congress (APC) youths condemned the alleged persecution of the party’s deputy national secretary, Mallam Nasir El-Rufa, by operatives of the State Security Service (SSS).
According to a statement signed by their leader, Mohammed Alhassan, the operatives laid a siege on the residence of El-Rufa with the aim to arrest him.
“Although the SSS claimed they went to arrest Mallam El-Rufa over the statement he made that there will likely be violence if the 2015 elections are rigged, we believe there is more than meets the eye in the agency’s incessant harassment and persecution of Mallam El-Rufa. This was not the first or second time El-Rufai would be at the receiving end of the SSS’s harassment.
During the last year’s governorship election in Anambra, he was illegally detained and prevented from leaving his hotel room by the SSS operatives, infringing on his human and citizen rights. He was also recently stopped from boarding an airplane at the airport,” said Alhassan.
Alhassan claimed such acts part of a hatched plan to intimidate and silence vociferous and outspoken opposition figures like Mallam El-Rufa’i, who has been courageously consistent on his criticism of the People’s Democratic Party’s misrule in the country.
“We condemn this act of illegality and brazen show of impunity by a government security organ that is funded with the collective resources of all Nigerians. Freedom of speech is guaranteed by the Nigerian constitution as a universal right. Therefore, no individual or organization should be allowed to trample on anybody’s fundamental rights as enshrined in our laws.
The SSS should stick to its constitutional duties of ensuring security for the nation and its citizens, and stop being used as a handy tool for achieving personal, political, vindictive aims of few individuals in power,” said Alhassan.
