Jonathan congratulates Koroma on re-election

25 November 2012, 08:48 -

Abuja - Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan congratulated Sierra Leone's President Ernest Koroma on Saturday on his re-election for another five-year term.

Koroma's victory, which was announced on Friday night, was "an affirmation of the trust and confidence the people of Sierra Leone have in his capable leadership", said a statement from Jonathan's office.

He urged Sierra Leoneans to support Koroma in moving the country forward to an era of democratic consolidation, peace, political stability and rapid socio-economic development.

And he assured the Sierra Leonean leader of Nigeria's support.

The 59-year-old incumbent triumphed over his main rival Julius Maada Bio of the Sierra Leone People's Party who trailed with 37.4% of votes.

Koroma was first elected in 2007 in an election that saw pockets of violence, but eventually led to a peaceful transfer of power from the opposition SLPP to his All People's Congress.
