Kaduna SIECOM cancels Soba LG election

02 December 2012, 09:48 -

Soba - The Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission (SIECOM) has cancelled Saturday’s election conducted in Soba Local Government Area of the state.

The cancellation followed series of complaints by PDP and CPC on alleged disappearance of form "A" meant for compilation and announcement of final result.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that both participating parties (PDP and CPC) accused the electoral officer, Malam Umar Nuhu, of connivance.

The complaints drew the attention of Alhaji AbdulKadir Aliyu-Idewu, the Electoral Commissioner in-charge of Northern Kaduna Senatorial District, who visited the area and summoned an urgent meeting.

The closed-door meeting was attended by the accused electoral officer, representatives of both parties, security agents and the Interim Management Committee Chairman, Alhaji Rilwanu Shehu.

After the meeting, the commissioner declared that following the disappearance of the form meant for recording and declaring the election result, the election had been cancelled.

Aliyu-Idewu said a new date for fresh election in the local government would be announced by SIECOM.

Speaking after the cancellation, the Interim Management Committee Chairman urged the people of the area to be patient and to remain calm and continue to be law abiding.

He lauded the people for conducting themselves peacefully during and after the poll, attributing what happened to an "in-house problem in Soba Local Government".
