Legislators commend Taraba Assembly

16 November 2012, 10:01 -

Taraba - Sen. Abubakar Tutare, representing Taraba Central, and Alhaji Inuwa Garba, the Chairman, Houses of Assembly Conference, have commended the state assembly for empowering the Deputy Governor to act as governor.

Tutare spoke in an interview with newsmen in Gombe on Thursday while Garba made the commendation during the opening session of the public hearing on the review of the 1999 constitution.

Tutare said: ``I commend them for doing what they are supposed to do and I pray that God will give the acting deputy governor the strength to govern the state pending the return of his boss. “ I am praying to God to give His Excellency good health to enable him to continue with the mandate given to him by the people of Taraba,” Tutare said.

Similarly, Garba said, `` I will like to thank our colleagues in the Taraba Assembly for accommodating the quantum and content of the constitution of Nigeria by doing what is right.’’ “If we can close our eyes to do what is right, I am assuring you that the gap between the leaders and the led will be closed,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Taraba lawmakers on Wednesday invoked the provisions of section 190(2) of the Constitution. It stipulates that the deputy governor should take over, if the governor is unable to discharge the functions of his office.

The Speaker of the state Assembly, Istifanus Gbana, presided over the special session which mandated the deputy governor to act as the governor of the state until the return of Gov Danbaba Suntai.

Suntai is receiving treatment in Germany due to injuries he sustained in a plane crash in Yola.
