Maizabura calls for re-registration of NDLP

28 July 2015, 10:01

Abuja - The National Chairman of the proscribed National Democratic Liberty Party (NDLP), Alhaji Umaru Mohammadu Maizabura, has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to consider the registration of parties his predecessor de-registered for the last election.

Maizabura, who is the former presidential aspirant under the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP), he advised the President to direct the Acting Chairperson of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Amina Zakari, to revisit the issue so the parties could take part in the 2019 polls.

Maizabura, whose party was one of 63 proscribed, made the plea during an interaction with media in Maiduguri, Borno State.

He lamented that the proscription was a negation of the principles of freedom of association as enshrined in the Constitution of the country.

“If my party is re-registered it will afford us the opportunity to actualize our ambition by offering sterling leadership qualities and development of our nascent democracy,” Maizabura said.

He lamented that it was improper to proscribe his party as it had all it took to be registered.

“It was proscribed without an appropriate notification. My party's proscription came when I was away on holy pilgrimage to Mecca. I only heard it in the media,” said Maizabura.
