New crisis hits House of Reps

26 October 2015, 13:15

Abuja - A fresh political war appears to be brewing between the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, and the House Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila, over the constitution of members of the House committees, reports Punch.

Dogara had last week announced chairmen and deputy chairmen for the 96 standing committees of the House.

The appointment of the chairmen, however, seems to have revived the division in the House as several members loyal to Gbajabiamila feel short-changed despite assurances that the exercise would be fair to all.

On the list, many lawmakers seen as Dogara’s allies in both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) got first grade committees, such as Committee on Appropriation; Committee on Finance; Committee on Power; Committee on Aviation; Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream and Downstream) and Committee on Basic Education, among others.

But members, who supported Gbajabiamila for the Speakership position have expressed disappointment over what they described as a lopsided  appointments of committee chairmen by Dogara.

Out of the 96 chairmen, the Speaker gave nine slots to Gbajabiamila’s allies.

Gbajabiamila’s allies are angry that the House Leader was not consulted in the selection of chairmen.
