Abuja - Rene Omokri, the Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on New Media, accused opposition politicians of making damaging utterances in order to discredit the President.
He expressed concern that such politicians were making comments for the sake of “scoring points against” Jonathan and thus urged them to desist from such conduct.
“Damaging Nigeria in order to damage the President is not politics, just like cutting your nose to spite your face is not wisdom,” Omokri said.
He said while criticizing the President's policies is democratic and desirable, attacking his person is deplorable.
“If the opposition had better ideas on how to lead Nigeria than the President, they would have attacked his policies rather than his person.
It isn't enough for the opposition to say they can do a better job than President Jonathan. They must tell Nigerians how they plan to do so.”
Omokri said Nigerians must insist the opposition “match wits” with the President ahead of next year’s general election.
“2014 shouldn't be an era of fire for fire but an era of ideas for ideas.
The opposition must discard their highly developed ego muscles and build up highly developed mind muscles to debate ideas,” he said.
