PDP asks tribunal to dismiss petition against Senate Minority Leader

Abuja - The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the Akwa Ibom State Elections Petitions Tribunal, sitting in Abuja to dismiss the petition challenging the election of former Akwa Ibom State governor, Godswill Akpabio, as the Senator representing Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District in the Senate, reports NewsDay.

Akpabio’s election is being challenged by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate in the March 28 National Assembly election, Inibehe Okori.

PDP predicated its motion on the grounds that the petitioners failed to properly apply for the commencement of the pre- hearing session as required by law, before going into the hearing of the petition.

The PDP’s motion asking for the nullification of the tribunal’s proceedings and the dismissal of the petition was filed after the petitioners had called many witnesses in proving their case.

Akpabio has since been elected as the Minority Leader of the Senate.

Tribunal Chairman, Justice Goddy Anunihu, reserved ruling on the application for August 25 .
