PDP chieftain dismisses merger claim

23 February 2013, 08:18

Gusau - A PDP chieftain in Zamfara, Alhaji Faruk Ahmad, has dismissed the claim by a former Governor of Zamfara, Sen. Ahmad Sani, that some PDP governors would join All Progressive Congress (APC).

Sani was reported in the media as saying that between seven and nine PDP governors had approached him indicating their intention to join APC.

In a reaction to the statement, Ahmad, who is the zonal ex-officio,  North-West of PDP, told newsmen in Gusau on Friday that the statement was nothing but "political propaganda".

"The statement is nothing but political propaganda and cheap blackmail by our former governor, which is aimed at scoring cheap political point and exaggerating the acceptability of APC among Nigerians.

"I challenge him to mention names of the governors or produce any substantial evidence that they ever approached him with the intention of joining the opposition.

"The fact is that Sani is himself working for the PDP in the APC, like he had been doing over the years," Ahmad said.

The PDP stalwart further said that the claim by Sani that he single-handedly made his deputy, Mahmuda Shinkafi, to succeed him was just ego massaging.

"Mahmuda was the favoured aspirant among the ANPP stakeholders when he was nominated as candidate in 2007 and he won elections as governor in 2007 even against the wish of the senator.

"In fact, when he lost his bid for a second term in 2011, Mahmuda, as a strong Muslim, believed it was what God destined for him," Ahmad said.

He said that Shinkafi would re-contest the governorship election in 2015.
