PDP women demand additional political appointments

Birnin Kebbi - The Women Wing of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kebbi on Thursday demanded for more appointments into political offices.

Hajiya Kulu Azare, the leader of the group, made the demand in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Birnin Kebbi.

She said although 35 women had been given political appointments by the state government, there was still need to increase the number considering the role played by women in the party.

Azare described the appointments as compensation for the role played by women during the 2011 elections, and in line with the UN resolution on 35 per cent affirmative action.

"Women in PDP would continue to mobilise others to join politics and be actively part of the development of the state."

She commended the leadership of the party in the state for supporting the election of 21 other women as local government councillors.

Azare also commended the state government for investing resources to empower women.

The woman leader noted that the establishment of skills acquisition centers and provision of equipment and capital had helped the women to achieve economic independence.

Azare said about 30 girls were recently sponsored by the state government to study outside the country.

She called on women in the state to acquire western and Islamic education to enable them get additional recognition in the society.
