Abuja - The People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) top brass is expected at a key campaign rally for its candidate for the Anambra governorship election, Tony Nwoye.
The “Grand Flag Off” campaign is scheduled for Onitsha on Saturday, days after the courts validated Nwoye’s candidature.
Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Mohammed Namadi Sambo will be the Special Guest of Honour at the event.
“The PDP National Campaign Committee for Anambra State invites members of the National Executive Committee, Members of the Board of Trustees, the Leaders and Members of the National Assembly, all PDP State Governors, all PDP Stakeholders in Anambra State and Leaders of the Party nationwide to the Grand Flag-Off of the campaign of the PDP Gubernatorial Candidate for Anambra State, Comrade Tony Nwoye, and his running mate, Dr Amanchukwu Azike, as follows on Saturday 9th November 2013 at Holy Trinity Centinary Field, Onitsha,” stated the party’s National Legal Adviser and Secretary Anambra State National Campaign Committee, Victor Kwon.
The Supreme Court had on Thursday restrained the Party from starting the campaign for the election pending the determination of an appeal filed by a rival gubernatorial candidate, Nicholas Ukachukwu.
The apex court, sitting in Abuja, later affirmed the earlier judgment by the Appeal Court in Port Harcourt, that Mr. Tony Nwoye was the validly nominated candidate of the PDP.
The governorship election is scheduled for November 16.
More than 20 parties are expected to field candidates to vie for the top position in the state.
Chaos and allegations of vote rigging have marred previous elections.
