Rivals in rare show of harmony after Ekiti poll

24 June 2014, 14:37Augustine Osayande

Abuja - In a rare show of political maturity, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has commended Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State for patriotism after he conceded defeat and congratulated the PDP candidate and Ekiti state governor-elect, Ayodele Fayose, for his victory at the last Saturday’s governorship election.

“This exceptional show of statesmanship has indeed earned Governor Fayemi the respect and admiration of Nigerians as a man of honour, a true democrat and a patriot,” the PDP stated in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh.

The statement said Governor Fayemi, who represented the rival All People’s Congress, exhibited the spirit of “sportsmanship” propagated and practiced by the PDP and President Goodluck Jonathan.

The ruling party said credit must be given to Jonathan for his insistence on free, fair and credible election at all levels adding that it was on record that the PDP and the President had never hesitated in congratulating other parties and their candidates whenever they win in an election.

The Party also thanked the people of Ekiti and the entire nation for the massive support given to the party.

It said the current leadership under the National Chairmanship of Ahmadu Adamu Muazu was more than ever before, committed to ensuring transparent and credible primaries that will guarantee the emergence of only popular candidates for elections.

The party called on stakeholders to work harder in this direction as the party would continue to provide a level playing ground for all Nigerians to genuinely pursue their aspirations within the ambit of the overall national interest.
