Rivers: Ibani to appeal against annulment of his election

28 October 2015, 08:23

Port Harcourt - The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Ikunyi Ibani, on Tuesday said he and his colleagues reserved the right to appeal the judgement removing them from office.

The Rivers Assembly Election Tribunal annulled the election of Ibani and 19 other legislators on Monday.

Ibani told journalists in Port Harcourt that in the case of Governor Akinwumi Ambode of Lagos State; the tribunal saw nothing wrong in the malfunctioning of the card reader and upheld his election.

He said he saw no reason why the issue of malfunctioning of the card reader should be raised in the governorship election case between Nyesom Wike and Dakuku Peterside.

The speaker said he was surprised to hear his election annulled due to issues surrounding malfunctioning of the card reader.

"I have not been removed as speaker or as member of the legislature."

Ibani stated that his lawyers were in the process of filing an appeal against the judgement of the State Assembly Election Petition Tribunal.

The speaker contended that with God on his side, victory would be his at the Appeal Court.

He called on the supporters of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to remain calm and law abiding.
