Rivers State governor alleges smear campaign

16 June 2014, 12:06

Rivers - Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, denied reports he felt “betrayed” by top members of the All Progressive Congress (APC) after he could not assume leadership of the party at its just-ended National Convention held in Abuja.

John Oyegun, the former governor of Edo, emerged as the first substantive National Chairman of the opposition party.

Media reports claimed Amaechi lamented the appointment of another Southerner to the top post.

Amaechi dismissed the “betrayal” reports as a smear campaign.

“It's 419 news by those who are afraid of APC. It's a political smear campaign to divide and destroy the APC after our very successful convention. The success of the convention sent a very strong message to them that we (APC) are indeed stronger, in a better position and ready to provide that change Nigerians really want. That cooked, fake report is another shameless, useless and futile attempt by them to stop the APC,”
Amaechi said.

The APC is projected to offer the ruling People’s Democratic Party the biggest challenge during the elections scheduled for 2015.
