Rivers State infighting takes new twist

15 July 2013, 09:17Emeka Adebanji

Abuja - The fight for the control of the Rivers State of Assembly has taken a new twist with the ruling People’s Democratic Party
(PDP) accepting the impeachment of the Speaker, Oelemabama Amachree.

According to the PDP State Chairman, Felix Obuah, the party recognized Evans Bipi as the Speaker.

It disowned Amachree despite the number of members that impeached him not constituting a quorum.

“As far as Rivers State PDP is concerned, Bipi is the new speaker of the Rivers state House of Assembly," said Obuah.

Despite the problems afflicting the state, Obuah dismissed comments credited to Governor Rotimi Amaechi that the state was under siege.

The Governor, who is suspended from the ruling party, made the comment amid the Senate Committee on State and Local Government Administration investigating the political crisis in the state.

“We are under siege here. For two months now, we have not met with security men," Amaechi was quoted as saying in Port Harcourt.

The impeachment of Amachree and suspension of Amaechi are blamed on infighting within the ruling party ahead of the 2015 general election. - CAJ News
