Smear campaign alleged against First Lady

26 August 2015, 08:41Augustine Osayande

Abuja – The Akwa Ibom State Government has alleged a media campaign against the state's First Lady, Martha Udom Emmanuel.

The State Commissioner for  Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Dr Glory Edet, described a newspaper report purporting that welfare packages for Akwa Ibom women under the Emmanuel were in decline as false, baseless and reprehensible.

The report published in a state based tabloid alleged that the Women Affairs Commissioner told a group of women under the aegis of Ini Women League that the First Lady is yet to articulate a robust policy for Akwa Ibom women.

Edet said such a meeting was never held and wondered why blackmail should be taken to such "ridiculous heights".

She frowned at the alleged false report and  described it as a figment of the imagination of the publisher.

The Commissioner charged journalists not to allow themselves to be  used by so-called detractors and politicians to blackmail and smear others.

She assured that the First Lady had been compassionate and had a  robust programme for women and children in the state.

The Commissioner hinted that the First Lady would soon launch her Pet programme for Akwa Ibom families.

She thus solicited for co-operation of well meaning Akwa Ibom women for the plans of the governor’s wife. - CAJ News
