Sokoto -The Sokoto State Government has awarded a
N220 million contract for the construction of a new secretariat complex
for the Goronyo Local Government in the state.
The Chairman of the local government, Alhaji Faruk Rimawa, disclosed
this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sokoto on
He said Gov. Aliyu Wamakko had approved the award of the contract to a
reputable contractor who has already been mobilised to the site.
"The contractor has been paid the usual 30 per cent of the total
contract sum, and we have since provided the land required for the
project,’’ Rimawa said.
He said the need for a new secretariat arose because the current
secretariat complex was located far away from Goronyo town, saying the
situation had been inhibiting the council’s smooth operations.
Rimawa, however, said the local government had rehabilitated and
furnished the existing secretariat complex with about N20.5 million.
"We gave a general facelift to all the structures with about N16
million, while N4.5 million was spent in furnishing all the offices.
"The project became imperative as majority of the structures were
hitherto in a bad shape, with the ceilings, including the one in my
office, on the verge of falling down," he said.
The council chairman said the present secretariat’s rehabilitation
and provision of a new secretariat project would help in providing the
needed conducive atmosphere for the workers.
"These will also have multiplier effects on their abilities to work
diligently and deliver the badly-needed social services to the people,"
