Suspended Amaechi still haunts PDP

05 July 2013, 09:05Augustine Osayande

Abuja - The ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) is concerned Rotimi Amaechi, River State Governor, will compromise the party's chances of winning in the 2015 general elections.

Amaechi, the powerful National Governors Forum (NGF) chairman, was suspended from the party in May for publicly opposing President Goodluck Jonathan's bid for re-election.

PDP's Rivers State Chairman, Felix Obua, as a "champion of opposition" ahead of the general poll.

"We are pained that the main champion of opposition in the country against the President is our own Governor Amaechi. This indeed is shameful," he said.

Speaking after a meeting with visit of River State PDP leaders and elders in Abuja, he said despite fears Amaechi will split the PDP vote, he favoured his suspension.

“We shall continue to support his suspension from the PDP until he retraces his steps from engaging in anti-party activities,” said Obua.

It is believed the suspended governor will lead a coalition of Nigerian opposition parties to contest against Jonathan and the ruling party next year. - CAJ News
