Tribunal refuses to stop petition against Wike

09 September 2015, 16:34

Abuja - Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday failed to stall proceedings at the governorship election petition tribunal in Abuja, reports Punch.

The tribunal rejected the contention by Wike and the PDP that a ruling of the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, had asked it to stay proceedings until it delivered all reserved rulings on all the respondents’ motions, which are seeking the dismissal of the petitioners’ petition.

Tribunal Chairman Justice Mohammed Ambrosa said the Court of Appeal, ruling, did not order a stay of proceedings, but ask the tribunal to accelerate hearing in the petition.

Wike’s lawyer, Emmanuel Ukala, who was not satisfied with the ruling, insisted that the appellate court’s judgment must be complied with before proceeding, an argument opposed by counsel for the petitioner, Akin Olujimi.

The tribunal, however, overruled Ukala and asked the petitioner to call his witnesses.
