Tribunal upholds Melaye’s election

12 October 2015, 16:02Lekan Oladeinde

Lokoja - The Kogi State National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal on Monday upheld the election of Senator Dino Melaye.

The tribunal struck out the petition of Sen. Smart Adeyemi.

Adeyemi of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had challenged the election of Melaye of All Progressives Congress (APC), alleging electoral irregularities and malpractices

The tribunal had earlier in July upheld Melaye’s election but had the ruling overruled by the Appeal Court.

The Appeal Court held that the tribunal was wrong in striking out Adeyemi’s petition on the grounds of technicalities, instead of substantial justice.

The court, therefore, ordered the tribunal to retrial the case.

The tribunal in its fresh judgement on Monday dismissed Adeyemi’s petition for lack of merit.

Melaye broke the news of his victory in a tweet on Monday morning:

“Praise God. Senator Dino Melaye’s election upheld and Senator Smart Adeyemi’s petition dismissed for lack of merit.
