Wike not barred from Rivers governorship election - PDP

08 July 2014, 18:20

Abuja - The ruling party denied reports it had barred Rivers State Chairman, Nyesom Wike, from contesting the next governorship election in the state.

In a statement, the People's Democratic Party (PDP) insisted it had not stopped Wike, who is also Supervising Minister of Education, or any other member from entering the contest.

The party, through a statement issued by Jerry Needam, Special Adviser on Media to the Rivers State Chairman, described the report as the handiwork of intimidated aspirants and opponents particularly, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Needam alleged a smear campaign against Wike.

"The party reassures all its members and intending aspirants into any office and not only the office of Governor of fairness and level playing ground for all. The smear campaign against the Supervising Minister of Education, Chief Barrister Wike is borne out of fear of his intimidating political profile and overwhelming acceptance by Rivers people as
evidenced in the continued calls on him to present himself for election into the office of Governor of the State in 2015," he said.

Needam said the party therefore enjoined all Rivers people and the unwavering Party members and supporters to discountenance the "sponsored rumours" and "media campaign" against Wike.

"The report of stopping the Supervising Minister of Education from contesting the governorship election is not true and is anchored on precarious feet of falsehood and deceit."

Defected PDP member, Rotimi Amaechi, now with the APC, is the current Rivers State governor.
