Yobe - Local government election is to hold in Yobe in June, Gov. Ibrahim Gaidam announced on Thursday in Damaturu.The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that there are 17 local government councils in the state.Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of caretaker committee council chairmen, the governor said: ``we are very much aware of Sections 1(2) and 7 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, and as democrats, we cannot prefer other types of rule to democratic governance.``It should be appreciated that the answer to the delay in holding election at the local government level lies in our circumstances of the prevailing security situation Yobe found itself.''Gaidam said that the poll would be conducted with the improvement in the security situation and commended security agents for their effort in restoring peace and normalcy across the state.``We also wish to appreciate the co-operation received from members of the public, traditional, religious and opinion leaders for their contributions to the relative peace presently enjoyed in the state.''The governor solicited for a collective public support in the maintenance of peace and security to fast-track development that would improve the lives of the citizenry.He gave the assurance that his administration would maintain the culture of transparency, accountability and good governance to improve the lives of the people.``We are determined to leave a legacy of transformation at the end of the tenure of our administration and this should also be the target of the newly- sworn in council chairmen,” he said.
