Yobe to review state laws

05 December 2012, 07:16

Damaturu - The Yobe Government is to spend N130 million to review existing laws inherited from the defunct  Northern Region and the old Borno State.

Alhaji Ahmed Goniri, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Damaturu on Tuesday that some of the laws were still bearing Pound and Shilling currencies and others bearing names of towns currently in Borno.

"Some of these laws can be described as obsolete because they are not in tune with the realities of the present day.

"You can imagine where the currencies in some of these laws are still in Pounds and Shillings with fines and charges as low as N20."

He explained that the laws had never been reviewed since the creation of the state 21 years ago, adding, "there is every need to review these laws to suit the present-day realities".

Ahmed said the Ministry of Justice, in collaboration with the state legislature and the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, would commence the exercise this month, to be completed in nine months.

"We are expecting contributions from independent bodies like the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Labour and civil society organisations for a comprehensive review."

NAN reports that only last week,  the Executive Council approved the N130 million to facilitate the review.
