Analyst reveals why Kalu defected to APC

28 November 2016, 11:28

Abuja - An analyst believes the defection of Orji Uzor Kalu, former governor of Abia State, to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is a ploy to have corruption charges against him dropped.

Governor from 1999 to 2007, he has defected from the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA).

Political commentator, Jude Ndukwe, said this was the latest in a line of series of politicians surviving probes for joining the ruling party.

“After all, Timipre Sylva had very damning corruption charges against him in court by the same EFCC (economic and Financial Crimes Commission), yet, he was the ruling party’s anointed candidate in the last governorship election in Bayelsa State,” said Ndukwe.

He said the late Abubakar Audu, former Kogi State governor, also had a corruption case but was anointed candidate of the APC in the last governorship election.

“So, when people conclude that Orji Kalu ran to APC for cover, and maybe, for canonization, they might not be blamed seeing the trend of events in this regard in the party over time,” argued Ndukwe.

Kalu’s defection came two weeks after the EFCC re-arraigned him on a 34-count charge of money laundering. EFCC is accused of being used to persecute members of the opposition and not acting on members of the APC.
