APC alleges violence a PDP ploy to delay polls

20 October 2016, 07:56Okoro Chinedu

Lagos - Security personnel have been urged to intervene amid the latest in a series of tensions besetting Rivers State.

The All Progressives Congress is accusing the rival People’s Democratic Party (PDP) of engineering and promoting insecurity as a strategy to scare the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from fixing a date for the rerun legislative election in the state.

Allegedly led by Governor Nyesom Wike, PDP is purportedly building its violence on the declaration by the INEC it would only hold polls in the absence of violence.

"PDP and Wike are aware that they cannot win any election in a peaceful environment, so they have resorted to the promotion of insecurity to ensure that the rerun legislative election in the state is endlessly delayed," APC Rivers said.

The party said this was a ploy to frustrate the election of APC candidates Magnus Abe, Andrew Uchendu and Ojukaye Amachree.

APC expressed "sadness" and "regret" Wike had turned governance in Rivers State “a laughable and comic venture where insecurity is not only promoted, sustained, watered but has become a way of life with murderers and gun wielding youths treated like celebrities.”

"…a state where outdated criminals are granted amnesty and accorded heroic receptions and treatments all aimed at scaring and intimidating INEC and Security Organs from performing their statutory roles in the state."

APC concluded, "Finally, we urge and plead with the security organs not to give up and allow Wike and PDP to frustrate and deny Rivers people proper representation at both the National and State Assemblies."
