APC remembers Rivers poll violence victims

19 February 2016, 16:12Emeka Okonkwo

Abuja - The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress said it was commemorating the alleged attempt to assassinate its governorship candidate, Dakuku Peterside.

The attack this time last year claimed the life of a police officer in Okrika.

“Today marks one year we survived massive gunfire attack at Okrika, Rivers State of Nigeria during a rally in which cars, stage rally and sound equipment were burnt and stolen,” said Davies Ikanya, Rivers APC chairman.

“How our gubernatorial candidate, Dr Dakuku Peterside and APC chieftains marked for elimination on that day managed to survive the onslaught still remain a mystery to most of us. As we thank God for securing our lives, we pray that such a plot against our people will never see the light of the day again.”

The attack was among a number of violent incidents that characterised the run-up to the poll.

APC alleges more than 100 of its members were killed.

Nyesom Wike, of the People’s Democratic Party emerged the winner ahead of Peterside in a disputed poll.
