Bayelsa Speaker refuses to vacate office after court sacking

18 January 2016, 10:05

Yenagoa - The Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Kombowei Benson has refused to vacate the seat days after the Court of Appeal nullified his election into the House, reports Punch.

The court had on December 9, 2015 sacked Kombowei as a member of the House.

The Speaker was sacked in a case filed by Ebifaghe Orunimighe, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the House of Assembly seat in Southern Ijaw Constituency 4.

Orunimighe challenged Kombowei’s victory on the grounds that an election did not take place in four wards.

According to him, even where elections were held, there was over-voting.

But despite the court’s order, Kombowei has remained in office.

Kombowe chaired the Assembly when the House received the 2016 state Appropriation Bill from Governor Seriake Dickson.
