PDP Senators stage walk-out over defection of Ondo senator to APC

30 November 2016, 12:24

Abuja -  There was a mild drama on the floor of Senate on Wednesday as senators of the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] staged a walk-out following the announcement of defection of Senator Yele Omogunwa by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

Omogunwa is the Senator representing Ondo South Senatorial district of Ondo State in the Senate.

Saraki had during plenary announced the defection of Senator Omogunwa to All Progressives Congress [APC] from the PDP.

In the letter read by Saraki,  Omogunwa mentioned division in the PDP as ground for cross carpeting.

Soon after Saraki read the letter of defection from Omogunwa, the Senate Minority leader, Senator Godswin Akpabio quickly challenged it, saying that as lawmakers, they must not encourage political rascality.

Akpabio said there was no division in the party as claimed by Omogunwa

lAkpabio' s comments led to a shouting match between the PDP senators and their APC colleagues who stood to welcome Omogunwa to their fold.

Consequently, Akpabio led PDP senators to a walk out.

News 24 recalls that Omogunwa formally decamped from the PDP to the APC on November 20 at his home town in Irele Local Government area of Ondo State

Omogunwa's defection came just six days to the just concluded governorship election in the state.

With the latest development, the PDP has no single senator in Ondo as all the three representing the Ssate at the upper chamber of the National Assembly are now members of APC.
