Court sacks Edo Assembly Chief Whip

24 December 2015, 13:45

Benin - City - A Federal High Court sitting in Benin City, Edo State on Wednesday nullified the election of the lawmaker representing Ovia South- West in Edo State House of Assembly and Chief Whip of the House, Sunday Aghedo, reports Leadership.

Aghedo’s fellow aspirant in the December 2, 2014 House of Assembly primaries of All Progressives Congress (APC) Godwin Adenomo, had gone to court, urging it to nullify Aghedo’s election.

Adenomo contended that he won the primaries but was upturned in favour of Aghedo by the leadership of the party in the state.

In his ruling on the case on Wednesday, Justice Muhammed Liman ordered that a fresh House of Assembly primaries be conducted by the APC after which a re-run election would be conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The judge ordered that the entire process should be concluded within 90 days.

Despite his victory in court, Adenomo has, however, said he would appeal the judgment, noting that he expected the court to declare him the winner of the general election outrightly after he was wrongfully substituted by the party.
